liminal [space] is a minimalist audiovisual installation. The name comes from the Latin word limen which means threshold. The installation creates a place of transition, a single intermediary point between origin / destination.
The projected geometrical patterns are generated interactively by the colours and the lightting conditions of the surrounding space. The sense of the threshold is created acoustically by a beat - the combination of two sinewaves of slightly different frequencies. The beat frequency is equally related to the characteristic of space and more specifically to the sound pressure level of the ambient sound.
